The Angels’ Share
The master distillers of fine whiskey still like to say that the first taste goes to the angels—“the angels’ share,” they call it.
A charming legend, for sure, and one with perhaps a grain (or dram) of truth. Even though the loss of a small percentage of the whiskey slowly aging in oak barrels can be explained as the result of simple evaporation—on some level, it may indeed be an angelic phenomenon.
Highest Quality
Like the legendary angels, I do occasionally enjoy the taste of a fine whiskey, especially bourbon. Sadly—unlike with the legendary angels—my tasting never comes free. Still, it’s always a blessing to savor a drink that requires years of patient care, skilled craftsmanship, and perfect timing to produce the finished nectar.
Engaging All the Senses
I like to think that enjoying the subtle aromas, distinctive tastes, and amber hues of a fine whiskey is good practice for savoring all the finer things in life.
For me, this includes savoring a good book that engages my mind, heart, and soul; a stunning sunrise or sunset; or the songfest of a mockingbird in a wooded sanctuary. Perhaps savoring a field of multicolored wildflowers, children at play anywhere, or a cup of steaming hot coffee with a cinnamon raisin bagel. And two of my favorites: a delicious meal by candlelight, or an intimate “walk and talk” with the one I love.
Now I ask you: What could be more angelic than that? Or more worth savoring?
